Café de Ceuvel is building world’s very first Biogas Boat! This boat will be able to convert organic waste into biogas to cook on in the restaurant. This is our next step in our mission to close as many loops as possible and to reduce our waste production. In the Biogas Boat, we are building a biodigester that converts all the organic waste produced at De Ceuvel into biogas, which can be used to cook with. The remaining digestate is a rich source of nutrients for plants and insects. And as the name suggests, the Biogas Boat can sail! In the nearby future, she will visit festivals to collect organic matter to convert into gas and fuel, thereby showing the larger audience the great potential of waste.

Closing loops


A biodigester is able to transform organic waste into biogas. The bacteria in the digester break down the bigger organic molecules in the food waste and convert them into methane gas. Methane is exceptionally useful for cooking. The special thing about a biodigester is the fact that chemical energy (methane) as well as nutrients (like phosphorus and nitrogen) can be obtained from organic waste.

Also, the Biogasboat has been completely built with the idea of upcycling. An old houseboat from Vinkeveen has been rebuilt into a nice barge, which we refurbished with sustainable linseed oil. For the floor of the boat we will not use the CO2-intensive concrete, but we'll reuse the asphalt from the Klaprozenweg! We are using two containers from the shipping industry, which are finished off with sustainable paint. In this way the boat is not just closing a loop with the digester, but is the construction of boat a closed loop by itself!

Why?


Cities currently are a drainage point for resources. Food, fuels and other valuable materials are produced all over the world and brought into cities. A majority of the materials end up as waste that need to be processed elsewhere . This linear model, however, is unsustainable. We believe in a new way of urban development that takes this into account. By closing as many loops as possible, we head towards our aim of a circular economy. By means of decentralized and small-scale technologies, we demonstrate alternative methods, showing that used resources do not have to be flushed or disposed of. The Biogas Boat is an excellent example of a way to process our own waste and to generate our own energy!

 

In the transformation towards a circular economy, we see an increasing attantion for decentralised initiatives. For organig waste decentralisation can have several benifitis, such as less transportation, better seperation at source and a better combination of local supply and demand for organic waste, nutrients and energy.

Huib Koel is the owner of Woodies Classic Boat Services who transformed  all the house boats into offices during the construction of de Ceuvel three years ago. Huib solidified the bottom of the boat and advises on the renovation of the boat.

BAM is a European construction company that holds sustainability as one of its core values. BAM is currently improving the roads in Amsterdam-Noord.
